WHAT IS A SHARED SERVER
Written by wwwhostingdirectory.com
The basic definition of what a shared server is as follows, it is what is known as a web hosting comomany or service and there are a number of different websites using the same server to have their website on the internet for people to view. There may be lots of different websites on the same shared server, but they are kept separate as each website will have its own little area to live in. Using a shared server is usually the cheapest option for most people, as every website on that server shares the cost of the server together. Is it the right option for you though?
If you are looking for something low maintenance and easy to keep and easy to update, then shared servers may be for you. They offer usually limited software and space, meaning your website will be easy to run and look after. On the other hand, if you have a massive website with a huge amount of traffic to that website then unfortunately a shared server is probably not for you. Using a shared server will be a lot more beneficial to a smaller website, maybe anew business just starting out, a personal website, or any other website that is relatively small in the grand scheme of things.
There are generally two types of shared servers, it may be beneficial to know the difference before making your choice. The first is that of a name based virtual hosting which can also be known as shared IP hosting. What this basically means is that someone searching for certain information from a shared server it only picks out the name that has been searched for not the IP address of that site. The IP addresses of all the website on the name based servers are the same.
The other type of shared server is what is known as IP based hosting. This is known as dedicated IP servers. Each website on the shared server will have its own IP address. This is what the server will pick out when someone searches for that particular site. This is usually the more popular way to use a shared server.
There are many web hosting companies that offer the services of shared hosting, but it is important to remember that you need to make sure what it is you actually need from the performance of your website and your server. |
