Application Hosting
Written by wwwhostingdirectory.com

Dedicated server hosting is the leasing of hardware for your website, because buying the hardware and the connection outright is beyond most businesses, and not financially viable in the least. Similarly, application hosting is the leasing of applications from an applications service provider instead of buying them and installing them on your server, to run them on your website. The most common options for application hosting are Linux application hosting and Microsoft application hosting.

The biggest reason why you would want to opt for application hosting is, of course, the expense. Buying the software in question outright can be unnecessary and avoidable expenditure, when you can lease them instead. The most common applications that application service providers focus on are intranets, extranets, messaging, content management and CRM and ERP systems. It’s much less expensive to host these applications than to install them.

When you choose an application hosting provider, you have to make sure that they offer all the applications that you want on your website, and that they have adequate support. Which applications you choose will depend on which platform you have. So it’s very important to keep this is in mind right when you’re choosing your platform for web hosting. UNIX/Linux and Windows hosting both have their own advantages and disadvantages.

The big attraction of Linux is that there are many commercial and free applications available for a Linux platform. But this can’t be the sole consideration when you choose your platform and your applications, tempting though it might be. You have to consider the kind of applications you want to run on your website. For example, if you want to run PHP scripts or a MySQL database, Linux is the best bet. Linux is usually considered to be more stable and versatile. Just because you use the Windows OS on your computer does not mean that you have to use a Windows platform and Windows applications for your website.

On the other hand, learning the ins and outs of Linux programming can be quite a challenge. Of course, you can opt to hire people to do this, but this will eat into your budget. Application hosting providers can take care of this. They will see to the actual running of the program’s, but this does not mean that you never have to learn. Even if you opt for managed hosting, you will need to know at least the basics of operating the software running on your website. After all, it is your website, and in case you cannot have support when you need it, you have to be able to handle things yourself at least to a certain extent.

One major consideration you have to keep in mind while choosing your platform is that many Microsoft applications will not run on a Linux platform. If you plan to have heavy use of Microsoft applications like Visual Basic, SQL server and Active Server Pages, Linux is not for you. A Windows platform will be the better bet. However, Linux is an open source program. This means that any bugs or kinks are constantly being resolved by a staff far bigger than any staff Microsoft could ever have – almost all the computer programmers in the world. Some of the most brilliant minds in the world swear by Linux and its source code is, as a result, constantly improving.

The biggest disadvantage of using Windows as your platform is that Microsoft applications cost money. However, if you opt for applications hosting, you can cut those costs a lot. If you want to use applications like ODBC, ASP, custom dll's, and databases like Access and MS SQL, a Windows platform is better. A windows platform is not as easy on the server as a Linux platform is, however. Application hosting can, to a certain extent, counter the biggest drawback of using Windows. People often opt for this because Windows in easier to use. However, there are always people who swear by Linux. The only way to decide which applications and therefore which platforms you want to run is by having a clear idea of what you want your website to be.
