Features of a Good Data Center

Article written by Maira Hashmi

A data center is where all the hardware – the computer system, the telecommunication and storage systems – are all stored. This is where the servers that keep you online are stored. Data centers are very important, because reliable infrastructure is a must. There are some features that a good data center must have. Let’s take a look at some of them.

First and foremost, a data center should be secure. All your information will be in these data centers. Just imagine how much information is stored in these data centers! The immediate thought would be about how to keep people from stealing information, how to prevent phishing, how to keep hackers out – and this is an extremely important aspect of security. One other aspect that we find a bit hard to think about when we talk about computers and the internet is the physical safety of these data centers. The data center might have the best software protection you can imagine, but are there enough precautions to keep anybody from driving up in a truck and physically stealing some of the servers with all your information that you want kept safe, secure and private, like maybe credit card details? This physical security is a very important feature of a good data center. You can only find out exactly how secure a data center is if you ask pointed questions and listen carefully to the answers.

There is a whole bunch of factors that come next, related to hardware. It all comes down to one thing – how reliable is the data center? This includes every aspect of the hardware, from the racks to the cables to the heat control system to the servers to the back-up system. The type, the weight and the diameter of the cable can affect performance. The heat control system is just as important. The actual cooling equipment, the arrangement of the racks and the cabinets all contribute to this. The back-up system is one of the most important parts of data center hardware. Even hardware of the best quality can fail, so there must be a back-up for everything. If they are not of the best quality, the reliability of the data center becomes suspect.

There are also some other factors, like the availability of spare servers and rack space, and how organized the data center is. The power supply is another big factor. If there is a black out, how soon will the generators take over? Will there be any down time? Are there in house generators? These are all very important questions.

There is another aspect of reliability that needs to be addressed, and that refers to the people working there. The hiring policy of the data center is important to you, so don’t be hesitant to ask questions. What about the authorisation process, and the hierarchy? The people who have access to the data center and their reliability is as important as that of the hardware itself.

Of course, one of the biggest factors is the speed. There are a few things to consider here. The servers must be fast and of the latest technology, but that’s not all. The internet backbone the data center is connected to and the network uplinks are just two of many other factors that go into determining the speed. The load balancing, caching technology, routers etc are also very important.

Another factor that sets a good data center apart is the level of responsibility, and one way of evaluating this is by considering how environmental friendly they are. Water-cooled racks and efficient power management are two ways of making a data center environmental friendly.

There are plenty of factors that go into making a data center good, but all these factors combine to make it secure, reliable, fast and responsible, the golden combination.
